A is for Atom - "Song for You"

A is for Atom "Song for You"

After an exploratory journey involving sideman gigs, relocations, and music school, New York transplant Mike Cykoski has shaken off his past and found his future, resurfacing in Brooklyn with a two-EP solo bow of literate, conceptual, thoughtful and playfully-orchestrated modern rock. Ironically Mike’s decision to leave the hired-gun musician hustle came when he netted an audition with pop-rocker Gavin DeGraw.

Mike Cykoski (A is for Atom) has been compared to The National and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke, but finds no musician more influential than his friend for many years, and the artist who inspired him to become a musician, Gavin DeGraw.

Mike’s knack for melding emotionally direct lyrics with refined, nuanced compositions stems from the dual influences of his parents—his mother was an Irish folk singer and his father a film-score buff. In music school, as an undergrad and a grad student, he was able to study and readily identify the qualities of film scoring that he was initially attracted to, like the classical structure of these evocative pieces of music.

“I listen to classical music, how operas are written like stories, and my lyric structures appropriate this compositional style where the chorus is an aria and the verse is a recitative,” he explains.

Peter Calandra - "Clyde and the Pearl"

Peter Calandra: "Clyde and the Pearl"

You may not know the name Peter Calandra, but chances are you’ve heard his music. The New York City-based composer and keyboard player has scored 40 films, written over 2000 compositions for television broadcast, including 37 theme packages, and performed as a musician in the Broadway productions of Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Phantom Of The Opera, The Lion King, and Little Shop Of Horrors. Parallel to this, Calandra has released three albums of imaginative and lyrical instrumental music encompassing jazz, contemporary jazz, classical, and refined pop.

His fourth solo album, Inner Circle, showcases pianist/composer/arranger Peter Calandra's talents across a wide swath of music styles, always with his trademark sensitivity, abundant technique, and spot-on attention to detail. Working with an outstanding assortment of guest players on acoustic bass, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flute, piccolo, fretless electric bass, and vocals, Calandra explores myriad sonic landscapes, easily navigating from jazz to fusion to pop to classical with uncommon grace, ease, and a rich sense of melodic accessibility without sacrificing depth of emotion. Of Calandra, Mark Hasan of kqek.com wrote "Calandra's writing is very deft...he shows a strong sensitivity for subtle emotional conflicts and the fusion of contemporary jazz, fusion, and light orchestral" and Music Web International's Demetris Christodulides wrote "Peter Calandra is...an impressively capable composer, with broad musical horizons." In reviewing Calandra's previous release, Ashokan Memories, Tom Lohrman stated "Inner Circle is a testament to Calandra's inventive approach to composing across multiple genres while retaining a signature sound which never fails to entertain."

The Walkmen's Peter Matthew Bauer Fall Dates

Peter Matthew Bauer is a rock & roll singer and musician with a debut record called “Liberation!” out everywhere now on Mexican Summer and Memphis Industries. It’s been called a “cult classic in waiting” by UNCUT magazine and has been universally embraced in the press. As an album, Bauer uses Liberation! as an opportunity to welcome the rest of the world into his personal history of a childhood spent living in ashrams, and a life shaped by the constant presence of religion and mythology amidst uncertainty. What Peter has learned, and what he imparts both on the title track and across the eleven songs that make up Liberation!, is a riot of experiential notions. “Liberation, as the idea of the record, relates to belief in its various incarnations. In a way I’m trying to poke fun at it; this Western idea of heaven, this Eastern idea that it will take a hundred lifetimes, or a thousand lifetimes to get somewhere better. You can be mad about these things, but you can also arrive at some sort of strange, joyful experience right now without believing anything.”

The constant changes in scenery that inspired Peter Bauer to write this record highlight a greater truth about the songs on Liberation! – that they exist on multiple levels, they take on meanings other than their intention the moment they left the studio, joined by what he’s phrased in the record’s finale as “the mystery of of it all.” Conceived largely on a sojourn all across Europe, Liberation! was recorded at a factory space in the Port Richmond neighborhood of Philadelphia with friends Quentin Stoltzfus, Christopher Colbert, Matt Oliver, and Matthew Barrick taking part in the recording and mixing. All of this work accounts for Liberation’s saturated, homemade feel, as Peter’s music fuses a wide swath of influences and technique into an assured, anthemic statement in the palette of rock ‘n’ roll. Liberation! is the soundtrack of one man’s journey inside himself, in preparation for the rest of the world to follow.

Alvvays - "Archie, Marry Me" Video

Alvvays "Archie, Marry Me"

Alvvays have unveiled the video for their breakthrough single "Archie, Marry Me". The hazy, sun-kissed clip accompanies one of this summer’s most talked about indie tracks and lands just before the band readies for a busy and in-demand international tour schedule.

Frontwoman Molly Rankin says of the video:
"So we made another super-8 video, one where we take 'take the plunge' to the logical extreme. The camera exploded at sea so we neutralized the black battery goo with vinegar and kept shooting. My hasty retreat via doggy-paddle was left on the cutting room floor. Go figure."

Comprised of Molly Rankin (lead vocals/guitar), Kerri Maclellan (keys/vocals), Alec O'Hanley (guitar), Brian Murphy (bass) and Phil MacIsaac (drums), Alvvays take the template laid out by the likes of Scottish stalwarts Teenage Fanclub, The Vaselines and Belle & Sebastian and fuse it with a strong sense of self and a unique personality. Each shimmering track on their debut full-length frames Rankin's melancholic melodies and unwavering voice with meticulous arrangements and needlepoint guitars.Internationally Alvvays will be released by Transgressive in Europe, Royal Mountain Music in Canada, P-Vine in Japan and Hi-Note in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.

LISTEN: AERS "Blue Tempest:https://soundcloud.com/aersmusic/01-blue-tempest

AERS is Tasha Abbott and Zack Nestel-Patt, currently based out of Brooklyn, New York. Their stunning arrangements liken the sounds of Grizzly Bear and Sigur Ros, channeling both as influences. The group has just premiered the dreamy, lustworthy track, “Blue Tempest,” via Redefine Magazine.

“Blue Tempest,” is a gracious first glimpse into AERS’ upcoming record due out later this Fall. The debut EP release, Blue Tempest, sets the scenery for the band’s haunting  tones that grace the record throughout. On “Blue Tempest,” Abbott’s voice lingers with dreamy lyrics, which paints a bold and sultry soundscape. Powerful yet graceful, her voice captivates delving deeper into the track. Nestel-Patt helps to build the song with layers of dark textures, bringing the piece to fruition. The sound of AERSwill stop you dead in your tracks; be prepared to fall in love with every listen.

Woods - "New Light" Video

VIDEO: "New Light" (Dir. by John Andrews) - YouTube

Woods' brand of pop shamanism has undergone several gradual transformations over their past few albums, but on With Light And With Love, the tinkering reveals an expanded sonic palette that includes singing saw, heavier emphasis on percussion, and a saloon piano that sounds like it was rescued from a flooded basement. Distinct from both the stoned volk of their earliest recordings and the Kraut-y dalliances of more recent fare, With Light And With Love showcases a more sophisticated brand of contemporary drug music that owes more to Magical Mystery Tour than motorik. If you've ever thought of Woods as a pop group comprised of weirdos, or a weirdo band that happens to excel at playing pop songs almost in spite of itself, With Light And With Love provides a corrective in the form of songs that show these two elements as natural, inextricable bedfellows. Throughout the album, vocals are frequently emitted through Leslie speakers and guitars perform one-string ragas like Sandy Bull reared on shoegaze and skate videos. With Light And With Love is an album of deeply psychedelic, deeply satisfying songs for a new age of searchers, of Don Juan and Animal Chin alike. - James Toth

Saint Pepsi Shares New Video

WATCH: "Fiona Coyne" - http://youtu.be/Bw_7UrqzNUg

Following last week's release of his new single "Fiona Coyne," Saint Pepsi is back today to share the track's appropriately lovelorn video. The Matt Walker-directed video has the teenage feel of Degrassi, which is appropriate considering the origin of the song's title comes from one of the show's characters. Check out the video along with a stream of the track above and see below for more info on Saint Pepsi's forthcoming 7".

--

For his Carpark debut, Saint Pepsi takes a step away from the more genre-shuffling styles of his Internet releases to focus his skills on high-power pop. The title track of the "Fiona Coyne" 7-inch is an uplifting tribute to fantastical romance and the joyous dreams pop culture can provide. Mastermind Ryan DeRobertis lays down a funky guitar riff and bass line of Chic-quality to tease our senses before tickling us silly with the chorus' ecstatic horns. "My love's on the silver screen/ she's always playing make believe," sings the 21-year-old songwriter, playing a bit of make-believe himself. The song, named after a certain graduate of Degrassi Community School, acts out the fantasy of dating a TV star and plays with the idea that music can be something of a catalyst for romance.

The b-side, "Fall Harder," is a lovelorn hit about a somewhat unattainable beauty. "You've got me under your spell/ and baby, I couldn't fall harder," DeRobertis sings over an Orange Juice-worthy riff and electronic subtleties like the sound of a Galaga battle. For this 7-inch, DeRobertis wrote danceable love songs with a nostalgic aesthetic to the production "because I think nostalgia is inherently narcissistic and I'm currently very into the idea of exploring the connection between nostalgia and narcissism," he says.

Army Navy - "The Wilderness Inside"

Los Angeles-based indie-pop band Army Navy is pleased to announce the release of their brand new full-length album titled The Wilderness Inside. Produced by longtime friend and notable producerAdam Lasus at Fireproof Recording and released today through the band's own label, The Fever ZoneThe Wilderness Inside expands on the band's signature, sparkling guitar-driven power-pop complimented by frontman Justin Kennedy's wounded lyrics.

Army Navy released its highly acclaimed self-titled debut full-length on their own label, The Fever Zone, in late 2008, an album Pitchfork declared a "bubbly effervescent valentine to obscure power pop bands of the late-1970s and early-'80s" in their 7.8 review, and what NPR described as "a Posies-and-Teenage Fanclub-style tsunami of melody and distortion that underscores the youthful essence of power-pop in all its bittersweet glory."

In June 2011, the band released their sophomore album titled The Last Place via eMusic's "Selects" program, a coveted spotlight that featured and offered The Last Place to eMusic.com's subscribers exclusively for an entire month. During its exclusivity, eMusic went on to describe The Last Place as "a poisoned Valentine dripping with equal parts beauty and scorn; imagine a Vulcan mind-meld between Teenage Fanclub's Bandwagonesque and Marvin Gaye's Here, My Dear and you're there."SPIN also went on to call The Last Place "a feel-bad record you can actually feel good about" in their 8-out-of-10 album review. Since the release of The Last Place, Army Navy has been touring both coasts of the U.S., sharing the stage with bands such as Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, The Features and others.

With the release of The Wilderness Inside, Army Navy will be making more live appearances throughout 2014. Tour dates to be announced soon.
